Reuse of Farm Dairy Effluent

The ability of poplars and willows to coppice gives promise that both riparian plantings and dedicated block plantings will be able to uptake nitrogen from irrigated dairy effluent that can then be fed back to livestock.

Benefits from using Poplars and Willows on NZ Dairy Farms

  • Poplars and willows are useful for soil erosion control but if affording a minimum 30% canopy cover may also be eligible for carbon credits.
  • This will require planting at a higher density than required for the soil conservation function alone.
